Gardening

Backyard Gardener : This is a one-stop information site to help people understand their gardening needs. It includes gardening plans and plant lists, and links to other gardening reference sites.

Botany : An online encyclopedia of flowers and plants, providing a general description of them, cultivation methods, soil and temperature requirements, pruning, means of propagation, and the different varieties and hybrids. Many large, colorful photographs are included.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden : Take a virtual tour of the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and view the many and varied gardens contained within. Also available are gardening information and news items, a link to educational programs and descriptions of scientific research.

Department of Horticulture Gardening Resources : Provides links to webpages at Cornell University and related organizations. Also available are gardening fact sheets on topics such as insect and vertebrate pests, diseases, vegetables, flowers, fruit, trees and lawn care. A flower and foliage database includes attractive photographs.

The Garden Helper : “Gardening help for the beginner as well as for the veteran gardener.” Includes: gardening guides for different types and styles of home gardens; plant guides, with profiles of annuals and perennials, fruits and vegetables; plants for specific needs; house plants; a gardening calendar; and a gardening forum.

Garden Web : Self-billed as the “Internet’s garden community”, Garden Web allows for a garden exchange of plants and seeds as well as exchanges of ideas in its numerous discussion forums. Also available are a database of plant data and images, a calendar of events, and a glossary of botanical terms.

International Society of Arboriculture : Professional advice on trees: planting, pruning, pest and disease control, health care and more.

Metro NY Home & Garden : Includes several discussion forums, a business directory, a listing of metro area gardening events, a garden web directory, and more.

My Seasons : The “Garden Solutions Family of Websites and Mail Order Catalogs” for eight companies: Guerney’s Seed and Nursery Co., Springhill Nurseries, Gardens Alive!, Michigan Bulb Co., Henry Fields Seed and Nursery Co., Rocky Meadow, Breck’s, and Audubon Workshop.

National Gardening Association : Features include timely articles, accompanied by colorful photographs and illustrations, and with links to related information. Also, there are “libraries” of articles, questions and answers, pest control tips and how-to projects.

New York Botanical Garden : Provides information on events, visiting the garden, plant information, and more.

Watch Your Garden Grow : This site provides information on growing, storing and preparing vegetables, from the University of Illinois Extension. It is available in both English and Spanish languages.

Yardcare : Get expert advice (from the Toro Company) on lawn care including building a lawn, pest and disease control, and maintenance. Information also is given on selecting yard tools (mowers, blowers, irrigation systems, etc.)
